What's with the name Chasing Lions?
This is a common question. Truth is, it references a story in the Old Testament, although Chasing Lions LLC does not have any religious affiliation. Chasing lions is about perspective, a mind set. To chase down the lion is to face your fears, to meet adversity head on, and triumph by becoming larger and more fearsome than the obstacle you’re faced with. I will summarize the story of General Benaiah, one of King David’s mighty men, as it is referenced in the first book of Samuel. Then I will tell you why I selected this name for our company, and what it means to be a lion chaser.
Benaiah was a wild man. Born of no privilege, status or social rank. He lived off the land, a simple life, until king David’s army was held down by a freak snow storm. On the perimeter of his ranks a man, Benaiah, came walking out of the forest towards the soldiers. As the soldiers were watching this man approach a lion jumped between Benaiah and the ranks. The lion turned to the soldiers and roared, the men quickly armed themselves and prepaid to fend off this lion. Then the lion turned to face Benaiah. As the lion turned Benaiah dropped his cloak of animal pelts and began running toward the lion. The soldiers were amazed to see the lion flee from this man, but even more amazed to see this man chasing the lion. Benaiah’s pursuit was cut short when the lion fell in to a pit. Seeing that the lion was trapped in this pit the soldiers approached only to witness Benaiah jump into the pit after this lion. They heard screams of man, matched with the roars of the king of beasts. A few minutes later, Benaiah rose from the pit and the lion was dead. In the audience of the King, the soldiers told the great tale of the man that chased the lion. King David asked Benaiah, why pursue this lion knowing that the soldiers were within range to fend it off and protect you. Benaiah answered, if he fled, the lion would have ran him down and killed him as he attempted to escape. The only logical thing for him to do was the illogical, to chase the lion down. King David promoted Benaiah to the General of his Army, listing him as one of his mighty men. A man born of no privilege, with no wealth, and without any status in society, faced his fears and was promoted to the second most powerful man in Israel.
The lion represents adversity; if we run from adversity it will overcome us much like Benaiah’s lion. Instead a lion chaser faces his fears, and charges head on into their problems. If we change our vantage point and view adverse obstacles as opportunities we can embrace them. Face your fears; embrace your opportunities how ever they present themselves. The point of life is not to arrive safely at death, remember at the end of your life you will only regret the lions you didn’t chase. CHASE THE LION.
